The service life of a terrace depends not only on board quality but also on the base, joist spacing, ventilation and fastening system. Even premium decking can deform when installed without following the manufacturer’s requirements.

Preparing the Base

The base must be strong, stable and capable of draining water. Decking can be installed over a concrete slab, prepared foundation, metal frame or adjustable pedestal system. Joists should not remain in standing water.

Installing the Joists

Joist spacing is specified by the board manufacturer. It depends on the material, profile thickness, installation direction and expected load. Diagonal layouts and commercial applications may require reduced spacing.

Fasteners and Expansion Gaps

Appropriate gaps must be left between boards, at board ends and beside fixed structures. They support drainage, ventilation and safe thermal movement. The required spacing depends on the manufacturer’s instructions and installation conditions.
